His company, Before & After, serves major global companies such as HP, Frito-Lay, AOL, Virgin Atlantic and Dunkin Donuts, as well as many other companies large and small, plus numerous professional organizations and educational institutions internationally.

Tom was featured in The Wall Street Journal <http://before-after.c... 's creative leaders series.

Some of the key points Tom covered were:

  • keep the message simple
  • do not overwhelm or try to get the buy on on the whole message
  • meet them on their own level
  • go for thinking people not Joe 6 pack
  • use new media, forget traditional media
  • don't go for broke on a big campaign in traditional media if you have no money
  • get people to agree with you on starting points, i.e. politicians cannot be believed right?
  • start with small steps avoid the big hammer
  • expand your message to the uninitiated, recruit them
  • retain the your core constituents
  • use your diversity for multiple campaigns
  • copy cat whatever works, use it again and again
  • get as high as you can on the list of people sympathetic to your cause
  • establish credibility
  • truth is not the same as credibility
  • use humor and satire, to point to the non-truth and discredit your opponents
  • the further out you go with your message from the core constituents the more indirect an non threatening you have to be
  • take many small steps
  • go to where [people are listening- relate to their issues first and do not draw a straight line too fast to your message, use patience and keep chipping away
  • establish familiarity with your message
  • change your marking plan when it doesn't work anymore
  • make some compromises to reach more people and bring them in
  • double your movement size instead of going for an all out impractical goal like a national strike
  • enlist sympathy and support by being on the side of the "angels".
