My five year old son, Andrew Johnson West (named after his great-grandfather who was named for the president at the time he was born) has been in the hospital for over a week now. Apart from his symptoms, they can't figure out what is wrong with him.
. As far as causes go, his brainwave patterns are inadequate, as per an EEG. His pituitary gland appears to be missing, very small, in the wrong place or more than one of the above. They couldn't find it in an MRI and were talking about possibly doing it over, but then decided not to, for the moment. They have tested his urine and taken dozens of blood samples. They can't find anything else wrong or anything that would cause his symptoms. They have done two spinal punctures to determine that he does not have bacterial meningitis, but may have viral meningitis or viral encephalitis, but they can't identify a specific viral agent or find any evidence of poisoning. Symptoms: he has gone from running around and playing, able to make short sentences and little jokes like "Daddy fat!" to being unable/ unwilling to talk at all, unable to use his hands and unable to walk. He is lethargic and sometimes seems to be sleeping with his eyes wide open. I can't tell whether he recognizes me at all anymore. Sometimes, someone can get him to laugh -- maybe once every other day. That's the only sign of intelligence he has right now. . My wife and I are taking turns being with him 24/7 at the hospital. They won't let anyone else watch him (except for the nurses, who are already busy), unless one of us is there. . |
